Gate Valves

Gate Valves are a type of stopper placed on a pipe system to block flow. Gate valves simply prevent the passage of liquid using a wedge that slides in and out of the pipe. In most cases, the gate valve is designed to be completely opened or completely closed. As a result, these valves are rarely used as a means of flow control; they generally just stop flow completely or are unused. Partially-closed gate valves may increase pressure in a system in unpredictable ways or cause vibration in the liquid.

Usage of Industrial Gate Valves

The American National Standards Institute, or ANSI, works with its member organizations to develop and publish standards and norms governing a wide range of industries. In conjunction with the American Petroleum Institute, or API, ANSI has developed two sets of standards governing gate valves.

Gate Valves Provide Fluid Control Solutions

Gate valves are valves that operate by turning a wheel. When the wheel is turned counter-clockwise, the valve opens, thereby removing a round or rectangular wedge out of the path of fluid flowing through a pipe.
